Our Heritage

Wesley Clair Mitchell, Founder of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in 1920, was also one of the founders of the Foundation for the Study of Cyles in 1941. At that time he was still the Director of Research for the NBER, a position he held until 1945.

On December 1st, 2008 the NBER confirmed the recession started in the US in December of 2007.

The methods that Dr. Mitchell initiated and taught at the NBER since 1920 have also persisted in the work carried out at the FSC to the present day.

While the NBER "backcasts" and confirms the economic cycle, the FSC still strives to this day to apply cyclic methodologies to forecast economic and other events.
 
In 1943 Dr. Mitchell was a judge on a committee at the Ecological Society of America to award a medal sponsored by the Foundation for the Study of Cycles to  

"the person making the  most valuable contribution to any line of cyclic research during 1943.  It is hoped that the announcement of these awards in journals of various kinds will help to make people realize how widely the study of cycles enters into diverse sciences such as astronomy, botany, economics, geography, psychology, zoology and so on"*
